Kate Fleming
Founder, Executive Director
Katherine Fleming is the founder and director of Bridge Initiative, a nonprofit that bridges art and science to create public art for environmental advocacy. The mission of Bridge is to be a conduit to shift the collective consciousness- making planet earth the priority through the lens of compelling and impactful artworks.
Founded in 2015 following Fleming’s expedition to Antarctica—where she witnessed firsthand the accelerating impacts of climate change—Bridge Initiative was conceived as a platform to synchronize artistic practice with ecological action.
Under Fleming’s leadership, Bridge has collaborated with artists, scientists, and cultural institutions to produce immersive projects that translate complex environmental issues into accessible visual experiences. Its inaugural expedition in 2018 brought artist David Benjamin Sherry to Alaska in partnership with the Alaska Whale Foundation to document glacier retreat and wildlife habitat degradation in the Tongass National Forest. That same year, Bridge formed a curatorial partnership with Bas Fisher Invitational, creating Waterproof Miami, a public art initiative addressing South Florida’s environmental vulnerabilities through site-specific installations and community engagement.
Fleming served as Vice Chair of The ReefLine during its two-year conception and permitting phase, helping guide the development of the environmentally functioning public artwork and artificial reef proposed to run seven miles along Miami Beach’s shoreline. Her broader advocacy work has fostered collaborations with leading artists, scientists, and organizations including Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), Coral Morphologic, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Michele Oka Doner, The Cultural Landscape Foundation, Carlos Betancourt, Path of the Panther, The Everglades Foundation, the University of Miami, and Mission Blue, among others.
She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Foundation.
Prior to founding Bridge Initiative, Fleming graduated from Parsons School of Design in New York City and built a career as a creative director and entrepreneur in the luxury fashion industry. Her background in design strategy and visual communication continues to inform her approach to environmental storytelling—positioning art not as illustration, but as a catalytic force for ecological awareness and civic engagement.
